Mr. Pierce McKoy

This is Mr. Pierce McKoy. He owns McKoy's Shoe Shines in downtown Durham, North Carolina. I had the pleasure of meeting him while doing a photography camp with Mark Maya. My friend Meghan Johnson. He is somewhat of a local celebrity; he says he's "been doing shoes since 1967, I'm inducted into the History of Urban Blacks Museum for doing it that long".

He continues to tell us a little about shoe shining, "You see, application is the most important thing on a shoe. You take a mans shoe, you look at and look at what he got on. Sometimes a shiny shine is what he wants, sometimes he wants a maintenance look. If he got on blue jeans and he got on a pair of boots, he might not want it to look like he's gettin' married in 'em but he wants 'em to look pretty good with his jeans."
